Bruce Johnstone

Managing Director

Managing Director of Colville Johnstone Lawyers, Bruce Johnstone, is the well respected head of the Civil and Commercial Litigation team, which has a large, successful Building and Construction, Debt Recovery and Insolvency practice.

Bruce has vast experience appearing in all the State and Federal Courts, as well as the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal (“QCAT”), mediations and conferences.

He is experienced in challenging and reviewing the decisions of the Building Services Authority (“BSA”) for all different types of trades throughout Queensland and recently received two of only four successful decisions (out of over 800 Applications), when the BSA consented to two of Bruce’s clients being categorised as a “Permitted Individuals” under the Building Services Authority Act 1991 (Qld), allowing them to both continue to work as licensed builders. These results were directly based on Bruce’s ability to clearly define the issues the BSA had alleged and being able to respond to each allegation in a clear and concise manner.

Bruce also has an extensive technical knowledge of the Building and Construction Industry Payments Act 2004 (Qld) and has experience of acting for both small and large clients throughout Australia, as Claimants or Respondents alike. He says that it is extremely important to have such knowledge in order to protect the individual client’s rights and advise them in the correct manner, to avoid costly decisions being made.

On 18 November 2013, Bruce became registered as an Adjudicator under the Building and Construction Industry Act 2004 (Qld).  In doing so, the Registrar acknowledged Bruce’s experience and knowledge of the Act to make Adjudication Decisions.

Bruce has over twenty years legal experience and has a forensic background to ensure that attention to detail is achieved in every matter.

Bruce is very community focused. He recently sat as one of the voluntary board members of the senior Redland Bombers NEAFL Football Club, coached a junior (under 12’s) AFL team and sponsors local junior and senior sporting teams, schools and special needs children.
